Finley’s Story: An Anxious Dog, a New Baby, and Two Weeks That Kept a Family Together

Some families call Off Leash K9 Training, Jersey Shore because a dog is inconvenient. Finley’s family called because a new baby had arrived in the house and their anxious four year old aussiedoodle had started lunging at her.

You can read Finley’s full review on Google – her family wrote all of this themselves.

Where Finley Started

Finley had been an anxious dog her whole life. Anything new or different in the house set her off, and when guests came over she barked without stopping for the entire visit.

Her family had not been passive about it. Over the years they tried an in-home trainer, a bark collar, and eventually anxiety medication. None of it made a lasting difference.

Then their first child was born, and Finley’s general anxiousness turned into barking and lunging at the baby. That is the point where a family stops looking for an improvement and starts looking for an answer.

The Training Journey

Before anything was booked, Jennifer spent several phone calls with them explaining how the training actually works and answering their questions. They booked the board and train hopeful but, in their own words, not optimistic. After years of things not working, that is a fair place to be.

Finley spent two weeks with Jennifer. Daily updates and videos went home the whole time, so her family could see what she was working on rather than sit and wonder.

Finley’s Wins

She came back, her family say, a drastically better version of the dog they sent.

The constant barking stopped. She learned place and will hold it, so having guests over went from a stressful event to something the family can enjoy. She mastered door manners and stays in place while her family greets people at the door.

And the one that mattered most: she stopped barking and lunging at the baby, and showed she could be trusted in her own home.

What It Changed for Her Family

Her family’s own phrase for what the training did is that it helped them keep their family together. There is not much to add to that.

They are also clear eyed about what comes next. They know there is work ahead to reinforce what Finley learned, and they say so. What they were given was a foundation, and they intend to build on it.

Why Finley’s Story Matters

Two things here are worth saying to anyone in the same position.

The first is that a long list of things that did not work is not evidence that nothing will. A trainer, a collar and medication had all been tried before Finley ever came to us.

The second is about doubt. Her family booked without believing it would work, and closed their review by saying that if you are worried the training will not work, so were they. At Off Leash K9 Training Jersey Shore we would far rather have that conversation on the phone, honestly, than have a family give up on a dog they love.
