Gunner is a two year old rescue. He came to Off Leash K9 Training, Jersey Shore with two things his family could not fix on their own: almost no impulse control, and resource guarding.

Where Gunner Started

Resource guarding is the one families most often try to live around rather than fix. A dog tenses over a bowl, a bone, a spot on the couch, and the household quietly reorganizes itself to avoid the moment. Nobody calls it a training problem. Everyone just stops reaching for things.

Gunner also struggled with impulse control, which is the same problem seen from a different angle: a dog who acts before there is any space between what he wants and what he does.

His family did the thing we wish more owners did. They stopped managing it and went looking for professional help.

The Training Journey

Gunner went through a board and train with Jennifer.

Guarding does not get argued out of a dog. What changes it is structure: predictable rules about who has what and when, applied the same way every time, until the dog stops feeling he has to hold his position. That work needs a trainer with the dog full time, which is why it happens in a board and train rather than an hour a week.

Gunner’s Wins

His family describe him as thriving. He has built a foundation toward calmer, more reliable behavior, and they are looking forward to keeping up with his training for years.

Notice the shape of that. They do not say Gunner was fixed. They say a foundation was built and they intend to keep working on it, which is the accurate way to describe this kind of work and the reason it holds.

What It Changed for His Family

Their line is that we changed Gunner’s life. What actually changes is the household. When a dog stops guarding, everybody stops walking around him, and a rescue who was being carefully managed becomes a dog who simply lives there.

Why Gunner’s Story Matters

Resource guarding worries people, and it should be taken seriously, but it is not a verdict on the dog. It is a behavior, and behavior responds to consistent structure.
