Koda is a rottweiler. He arrived at Off Leash K9 Training, Jersey Shore with very little training and, in his owner’s honest words, zero self control. That combination in a dog that size is exactly the phone call we expect to get.

Where Koda Started

Koda had never really been taught anything. There was no bad history and no aggression in the picture. He simply had no brakes, no default behavior to fall back on, and no reason to think a command was anything other than a suggestion.

His family had a vacation coming up. Rather than board him somewhere he would come home from unchanged, they used the two weeks.

The Training Journey

Koda went through our two week board and train. Fourteen days of living with a trainer, working the seven core commands and then taking them out into real distraction, which is the part that turns knowing a command into obeying one.

His family were away for it, so the nightly updates did more than usual work. They got told what Koda’s strong suits were and, just as importantly, where he was struggling. That second half is not the flattering half, and it is the reason the reports are worth reading.

By pickup day they were, in their words, excited and nervous at the same time. Every owner is.

Koda’s Wins

His owner describes the difference in front of them as day and night.

The other thing he noticed was the bond. Koda was clearly comfortable with his trainer, comfortable enough to have enjoyed his two weeks, which told his family more about how he had been treated than any report could.

Then came the handover, and this is where a board and train is won or lost. They were taught how to use their new equipment thoroughly. His trainer walked them through every command. The rule he gave them was blunt and easy to remember: always follow through with a command, and always win the command. He took the time to make sure they understood not only how and what, but why, and did not let them leave with questions.

What It Changed for His Family

His owner says he could not be happier with the outcome, and pairs it with something else: the knowledge he and his wife walked out with. He now plans to board Koda with us from here on, which is the kind of vote we pay attention to. His closing line was a thank you from his whole family.

Why Koda’s Story Matters

A large, untrained, high energy dog is not a behavior problem yet. He is a behavior problem waiting for the wrong moment. Koda had no dark history to undo, and dogs like him are some of the most satisfying two weeks we run, because the change is not gradual. You hand a family back a dog who listens.
